ABOUT

Helen in Canada

Helen Baines is attempting to reconcile something that is acutely felt with the substance of the landscape. She has a particular interest in the specificity of place; how stories imbue landscape with meaning and significance, notions of transcendence and our own personal geographies. It is an intimacy with the landscape and a sense of embeddedness that she seeks to locate in her work, and the slow process of painting is her means of searching, not for the bucolic, but for something more hazy that sits just outside her peripheral vision.
